BOS Power wins contract with Oma Baatbyggeri for Torghatten Nord ferries

BOS Power has been selected as the system integrator of electric propulsion systems for two new all-electric ferries. The ferries will be built by shipyard Oma Baatbyggeri AS for the ferry company Torghatten Nord, and will enter service in Finnmark, Norway in January 2026.

The two ferries will serve the routes Korsfjord-Nyvoll and Klokkarøy-Kjerringholmen, both located near Hammerfest in Finnmark. These routes represent key commuter and transport links and will soon benefit from zero-emission travel, significantly reducing the environmental footprint.

The ferries feature a cutting-edge catamaran hull, skilfully constructed from aluminium for optimal durability and efficiency. At 49 meters in length overall, each ferry is designed to carry either 28 passenger cars or one commercial truck and 18 passenger cars, in addition to accommodating 95 passengers.

Investing in emission-free public transport solutions

The scope of delivery from BOS Power includes the complete electric propulsion systems, incorporating battery packs, MOVEe integrated power and energy management system designed to optimize performance and efficiency.

The vessels will be equipped with an effective electric propulsion system comprising two azimuth thrusters, each powered by permanent magnetic motors and the onboard battery system.

Strategic cooperation with both the shipyard and the operator

"We are thrilled to contribute to a sustainable maritime future in partnership with Oma Baatbyggeri and Torghatten." stated Eirik Nesse, Director of Marine Propulsion at BOS Power. "Our innovative solutions will not only reduce emissions but also enhance the efficiency and reliability of transport services in this essential region."

Oma Baatbyggeri`s CEO, Gunnar Jan Oma, shared his excitement for the collaboration, stating, “BOS Power worked closely with us and understand our unique challenges and needs of the vessels. Their expertise and collaborative approach helped identify the right solution that perfectly suits the vessels operational requirements.”

Torghatten highlights the critical role of the new electric ferries. “Transportation to and from Norway's coastal communities needs to be environmentally sustainable. We are looking forward to providing future-proof zero emission ferries to the routes." says Hallgeir Magne Lohn, Head of Development at Torghatten.

With these ferries, Torghatten contributes to the renewal and modernization of the operation of ferries in Finnmark. Finnmark County appears to be innovative with a strong environmental focus and the contract fits well with Torghatten's aim to be a leader in environmentally friendly ferry operations.
